THE GIFT OF FLYING
2023 WATERCOLOR 12” X 18” Joy can be found and felt in many places. A feeling I associate with joy is hope, one of my sentiments when I first wrote a wish list to the three wise men. That bubbly feeling had stuck with me after every parade on Dia De Los Reyes Magos. Reality can be thorny like sharp branches, but it is lively performers who bring the legend of Los Reyes Magos, or the three wise men, to life. Feelings captured on the bustling streets of Mexico continued to exist as I painted this. Similarly to the days I watched hope-filled balloons released into the sky, I still stare in awe. |
La Monarca
2023 Acrylic 24” x 24” The Monarca from the Danza De Villachuato is considered frightening. I’ve seen the Monarca but not the frightening. They remind me of music and or dancing. The strong rhythms translate to bold lines on my canvas. As I made my piece I got more familiar with the Monarca’s mask although I don't know who is under it. My piece is meant to show that things are more than they appear and there is purpose in everything. Such as embroidered skirts, startled expressions, and crowns of flowers. Or in Monarca's case, beautiful with every piece. |
500 Days Ago
2023 Watercolor 18” x 12” When they arrived in Mexico five hundred years ago, the Spanish built an Hacienda in my family's town. However, around five hundred days ago, my cousins and I explored the abandoned building. An Hacienda is a Spanish colonial building, comparable to a plantation. This story inspired my piece. I was not afraid of going inside but rather intrigued when we snooped around. My painting intends to raise the questions of why we decided to search around there, what we uncovered inside, and how we came to look at it as a fond memory. My artwork is intended to portray the dream-like memory of that eventful day through the use of watercolor paints. |
